Getting my head examined

CT Scan information here
I went to the doctor last week because of a curious symptom I've recently developed. He could find no outward reason for it, so tomorrow I'll have my head examined by this machine: a CT scanner. I've never had one before, so it will be interesting to see what he might discover.

Basically, the reason I went to see him is that lately when I awaken from sleep, my left eye doesn't want to open. It's almost as if it's shut because of dried crust, like you get when you have a bad cold. But there doesn't seem to be any of that, and it only happens to one eye. The doctor ascertained that both sides of my face, including my eyelids, are the same, and there doesn't appear to be any weakness on one side of my body or the other. He was stumped.

So, he thought it might be a good idea to have my head examined to make sure there's nothing in there. I do hope they find something in there, like maybe a brain. I suspect they won't find a cause for this curious symptom, other than possibly age-related parts of the body giving out. Although I have used both of my eyes equally, it seems that sometimes one side wears out before the other.

While I was visiting him, I asked about some achilles tendinitis I've been experiencing on one heel, and he thought maybe it's caused by overuse. Well, I use both of my feet equally, too, and why would one begin to hurt and not the other? The pain in my heel has gotten much better since last week, although the eye thing hasn't. It's very annoying, and I have started using artificial tears in that eye to see if it helps at all, but so far (one night), it hasn't made a difference.

Anyway, I'll let you know what happens. One more thing I will have experienced after tomorrow. And it wasn't on my bucket list.
:-)

  1. it would certainly be a cause for concern. glad you are getting it checked out. i hope it won't show anything abnormal, though, and the situation will resolve itself.

  2. I'm stumped. But of course I don't have any medical education.

Let's just hope and pray that it's as 'simple' as aging!!!!

  3. I have the same problem and my eye doctor said it is like everything else, slowing down and wearing out. At age 82 I have very little to complain about.
Still it is a good idea to check it out. Eyes are so important.

  4. I've had a CT scan (problem with hearing so Doc wanted to check it wasn't anything sinister). The one thing that surprised me was how loud the machine was at it turned! My news was what I thought - age creeping up on me.

  5. Fingers and toes crossed.
I have never had a CT scan but have had several MRIs. For a non invasive procedure I find them incredibly confronting - and the noise is unbeleivable.
    Good luck.

  6. So glad you are getting it checked out. Most likely it is one of those darn "age related" phenomenons but you are smart to find out. Pleas do let us know.

  7. Good luck with your visit. Much easier with a CT than an MRI!

  8. Yes, best to check it out. I've had CT's, MRI's, etc. Not too bad. I don't especially like the closed MRI's, but what can you do...

I told my doctor the other day that I generally figure that it's *age related* (since I've never experienced this particular symptom and I've never been old before either). She laughed.

  9. I have a sticky eye some nights ...always my left eye and that is the side I sleep on. I swear sometimes it feels glued shut. I think my eye drys out because my eye doesn't close all the way while I sleep. No problems with the right only the left. I have eye drops too and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I Hope you have a good outcome:)

  11. Lucky to live in a time when we can have these things examined, like our heads!

Good luck with the CT scan tomorrow.

  12. I hope this eye thing clears up. I wouldn't want to see you walking around with a tooth pick holding you eye lid up!

  13. I hope the mystery is solved, but I hope it isn't because they find something happening in that head of yours that is scary.

Our bodies are a mystery. One side is sometimes so much weaker than the other. My left side is my problem side. That puzzles me because I am right dominate. You'd think that side would be weaker.

I have such dry eyes that I sometimes have to use my finger to open my eyelids in the morning. I hope that is your problem. It seems fixable.

  15. Weird aches and pains - some come and go and others linger - seem to be a common occurrence as we age. Wishing you a problem of the minor variety.

  18. That overuse of Achilles tendon sounds familiar. I walk harder and heavier on my left foot so that may be why I have the problem on that foot more so than the right. However, my left side seems to be strange. Most of the things that go wrong, go wrong on the left side.

Hope they are able to find something that can be alleviated with the CT.

  19. Ir's good that you are getting it checked out, and good that you have a doctor that listens!

  20. I've never had a CT scan, but recently had my first MRI. The machine is so loud! I laughed at the fact they gave me headphones so I could listen to music during the procedure.

Sometimes tests lead to only more questions and tests, which becomes so frustrating. I hope for you there is a simple, quick diagnosis and solution.

  21. I'll be thinking of you, DJan & eager to hear how it goes.
If these machines could see such things - I think they'd find, most of all, a very beautiful mind!

  22. I have had the same thing lately. Would you believe it! Reading on here some of the comments, it appears to be quite common. Mine started a few weeks ago in my right eye. Sometimes it's in the left as well, but not as bad. My eye dries up during the night and my eyelids stick together. I have a pot of optrex next to the bed so the first thing I do when I wake, is to drown my eye with that, then open the lid with my finger. It is very disconcerting, isn't it! Also recently, I've had a very dry throat and nose so I wondered if it was a virus. After a night of 'dry eye', my right eye often feels a bit sore the next day.
Are you on blood pressure tablets? I've heard they cause dry eye sometimes too.
I've been waiting for mine to clear up on its own but so far no luck, so I shall be watching your posts to see how you get on. I very much doubt if it is anything serious D-Jan. Like everyone else says, it's probably one of those darn horrid 'getting older' complaints.
I went to the chemist to see if he could recommend something other than Optrex and he gave me a gel to put in my eyes at night. He said it would stay in the eye longer. It feels very nice when I put a blob in my eye - very cold and soothing, but it doesn't stop my eye(s) drying out later on.
    Good luck with it.

  23. You made me laugh when you said you hoped the CT scan would at least find a brain!
It's wise to see the doctor when you have any kind of problem.

  24. That scan will probably find the brain of a 30-something year old woman. :)

I suspect that it's nothing serious since you are so fit and have no other symptoms of concern. And it appears that you're not alone. Check out Google.. you may find your answer there.

  25. I was diagnosed with dry eyes a few years ago and found out that we don't make tears at night. Eye drops have worked for me up to this day.

  26. A driver especially a salesman may have more purple spots on their left arm. The sun damage on ones eye could be different too....depends on the position of the sun and whether one is a driver or a passenger.

  27. Like some others, I've had that eye thing, a couple of years ago. One eye would kind of stick, esp. in the morning. But my case wasn't too bad, and it went away on its own.

As for the CT scan, I've had a couple -- piece of cake. Like walking half a mile, slightly downhill. Anyway, good luck; I'm sure you'll do fine.

  28. Take a look t Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. Years ago, I used to develop iritis in my left eye after I finished a book.

The left side of the body is governed by the right brain - creativity Itis is often about frustration anger, irritation. I realized that when I finished a novel, I experienced a kind of postpartum depression - that I wasn't "seeing" the larger picture. Ever sine that realization, the iritis stopped.

    Symptoms as symbols, metaphor.

  29. How did the MRI go?

    btw...Lunger: 1. A person that lunges 2. A person who has a chronic lung disease e.g. Tuberculosis. 3.
A thick wad of spittle dredged up from the bottom and expectorated in a public place.

I'm checking back to see how the MRI went. I've been praying for you, Jan.

  31. Good luck with your test! Hope you find it's just dry eyes like so many of us are experiencing. I use gel before bed, but also keep some long-lasting drops next to my bed to use when I wake up with any dryness. I also use it several times a day to keep the eye moist so you don't damage the cornea. Also, cut down on computer use before bed. Apparently, we don't blink often enough when we're staring at a screen. As for the achilles, see a physical therapist. They taught me some exercises and gentle stretches that really help.

  32. No, that wouldn't be on my bucket list, either. I hope there's nothing to worry about. Glad you are having it checked out, though. Let us know what happens.

  33. My optometrist recommended Refresh PM. It's sort of a gel. It does work when my eyes are so dry I can't open one of them.
