I'm so enjoying the garden this year. However, it was about this time last year when I began to get discouraged by aphids and mealy bugs, so I am watching my plants carefully and hoping everything will be better this year. I've planted no kale, no brussels sprouts, since they were basically infested almost immediately. My broccoli and red cabbage are coming along well; I've got my fingers crossed.
In about an hour, I'll leave for an appointment with a dermatologist. When I changed insurance this past January, I immediately called my new provider for a referral, as required. I got on a list to receive an appointment, and here it is June and I'm actually going in to see someone. It's not like I have any real issues, but at my age (and with melanoma in my family history) I'd like to at least have a baseline examination.
I laughed because Smart Guy got a woman doctor (he sees her tomorrow), and I have an appointment with a man. I didn't have any say about it, but if I could have switched, I would have. It's no fun to undress in a doctor's office with someone you've never even seen before! Or is it just me? But at least I've got health care; I should be grateful. The clinic I belong to is a good one, and I really like my primary care physician (another man), even if he doesn't look old enough to drive yet.

Home grown anything tastes soooo much better. Tomatoes and strawberries in particular.

i don't mind if it is man, woman or barely-past-puberty (which some docs or assts. appear these days to middle-aged me!) good luck w/ the appt, though.

ReplyDeleteSometimes I get the feeling that women doctors are lesbian...no, don't get me wrong...but there is just that vibe I've got from some. NOT ALL...I'd prefer a woman doctor, but well....y'never know.

What IS it about these doctors? My last one was all of twelve. My most recent - lucky for me - is a woman about my own age. Finally, someone who "gets" me.
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband had a cardiac arrest in Arizona, he spent three days at the U of A Medical Center, which is a teaching hospital. Youngsters, most of them - but he got excellent care and lived to be a Continuing Grumpy Old Man.

So glad you are getting that baseline exam. You will feel much better once you get the "all clear" from your dermatologist.

ReplyDeleteI have a woman nurse practitioner and Art goes to her too. Art doesn't mind that she's a woman, but I'm really glad she is.
I keep telling myself to schedule a dermatology check up, and then I keep putting it off and forgetting.

We have a few strawberry plants that are producing a few berries, but they would like a lot more sun that we have in our yard. I need to check on them again and get any ripe ones before the slugs do.
I saw in the paper the the Puyallup Valley strawberries have been coming on for two weeks now. I might need to get to the Farmer's market on Thursday and see if I can get a few.
You are most wise and thank goodness you have an appointment and also healthcare. You are smart to get checked out. I never worry whether Doc is male or female - they get younger every time you get a new one. its hard to keep Doctors in a small town, where the old ones have retired, the young ones are eager to go to the big cities and earn lots more money. We are usually lucky to have the same Doctor after 2-3 years - not like the old days when the Doc lived across the street from us in our neighbourhood and Mom would call him and he would come - Docs today are not like the olde days at all as far as house calls n writing up a bill. You could spray for the aphids. If you don't want chemicals, try a washing up liquid solution.
Your strawberries do look great! I love strawberry and spinach salad - maybe with a few pecans on top. As for the Dermatologist, DH and I started going to one last year... and yes, it's a woman. I also prefer to see our male doctor's nurse practitioner (a young woman)... but it's not about clothes... in my experience, I've just found that they actually *listen*.
ReplyDeleteI'm already fighting the aphids on my hibiscus plants. And the heat has arrived - before my tomato blossoms have had time to set. I try every year here in Austin, but such a lesson in frustration. Have picked and eaten from the three varieties of green beans I've got going. I need bees though. My pumpkins, cucumbers, squash and muskmelon are not getting pollinated. Sometimes not certain why I try.

We have a woman doc here and I like her as does my Honey. It's strawberry season here as well and I'm enjoying them and all the herbs on our balcony (especially basil!) which we harvest daily. Hope your dr. visit goes well.

ReplyDeleteAmerican health care perplexes me. Why can't the two of you see the same doctor.. presuming you're on the same plan of course? Too bad you can't just chose who you want to see and get coverage for him/her. Good luck with your appointment.
Those strawberries look delicious! Everything always taste better when you grow it yourself. I hope all went well with your new doctors. It really doesn't matter to me if they are male or female as long as they pay attention. The last one gave me a prescription for penicillin after I had told him I was allergic.
