Milestones

My 2001 Honda Civic is into six digits
When I returned from Skydive Snohomish on Sunday, I figured that somewhere along the way my car would turn over from 99,999 miles to 100,000. But when I pulled into the apartment parking lot, it was exactly ten miles short. Yesterday when I went to get my hair cut, I realized that it would turn over somewhere in the short distance I had to travel. I didn't check it when I arrived at the salon, and then didn't even think about it until I was almost home! I looked down and saw that it had turned over to six digits. If I had been paying closer attention, I would have gotten a snapshot of the final five, but I missed it. This is as close to documenting a true milestone as I've ever gotten.

I don't drive much, using the bus to travel to town every day to visit the coffee shop and the Y, but for errands I find it much easier to drive. But still, I don't drive 5,000 miles in a year's time. Saves on gas and wear and tear on the car. I just recently had the timing belt and front brakes replaced and will soon be in the market for new tires. Even not driving it much, you still need to take care of maintenance. And insurance. My little Civic is a great car though (don't tell her I said so or it might go to her head gasket).

Another milestone is that yesterday a few of my strawberries got ripe! I have to say that a sun-warmed fresh strawberry right out of the garden is a real treat. I've got quite a few more that will be getting ripe soon, and then it will be time for a gastronomical explosion of flavor!
Pretty things, aren't they?
We've got another week of beautiful weather ahead, so the garden will be providing me two of my favorite things: some exercise (weeding and watering) and some culinary delights. I'm off to see if there are any more ripe ones, and to harvest some lettuce. I hope you are having a great day!
:-)

  2. Those Honda Civics are beasts!
It is in the prime of its life, trust me! Go Honda Civic!!!
I'm just so glad to see that the speedometer needle is pointing to "0" in the photo. :))
    Love the strawberry photo, too.
We planted strawberries for the first time this year. It is a bit hot here for them, but we have been able to eat a few. Blooms are still on the bushes, so I'm not giving up hope.
Hugs to you, Jan. Continue to enjoy the fruits of your labors. There's nothing quite as satisfying as growing one's own produce and enjoying the bounties of the harvest.

  4. 100K is truly a milestone!! Especially if she continues to purr like a kitten! That shows that you pamper her by buying what she needs like a set of new rubber shoes, timing belt [I need a new timing belt for ME!!], oil changes, etc. Way to go. And I hope she continues to run well....I know she will.

That part of the strawberries sounds sooooo yummy.

  5. Fresh, home grown anything is a taste sensation.
I well remember my mother's cockatoo stumping around the garden to investigate the strawberries. When he found one which looked ripe he would carefully pick it up and examine it from all sides. Only when he was sure that it was completely ripe would he pick it. We didn't get many fresh strawberries. He did.

  6. I have an old Honda Accord with 181k miles, still going strong even though it looks kind of old.

  7. I HAD to laugh at the head gasket reference! (Even though, I'm not quite sure what one is....).

I'm amazed that you've just hit six digits in your 2001. Mine is a 2005 Corolla and I already have over 146,000 on it!

But, then again, we don't have great public transit here. And, I love to drive.

  8. Ripe strawberries and a big 100,000 mile milestone; well done. I drive less than 7,500 miles per year too, and get a big discount on car insurance due to that. Did you check that out with your insurance?

  9. Nice to have a dependable car and with good care it should last you a few more years. Your strawberries look luscious:)

  10. You are like my husband. He drives about 5,000 miles a year. His 1991 Mazda only has about 130,000 miles on it. He is taking it in next week to be serviced. He does that about twice a year. My 2005 Subaru has about 103,000 miles. We take it on all of our trips.

  11. Yes, there's always something important about certain milestones that are reached. For strawberries I prefer the native ones.

  13. It's strawberry season here, too, and I've been eating them daily while they last. Yum! Neat about your car. We don't use ours much either and have put on 31,000 miles in our 5 years here.

  14. I too have just reached a milestone. I am the oldest female member of our Bike Club. The oldest male is 82 and I am 11 years younger. hehe Congratulations on reaching a milestone with your car. I can remember doing the same thing, as the thousands caught up to the big numbers. I've heard a lot of good driving stories about "Honda Civic", like "Duracell Battery" - takes a lickin' n keeps on tickin'. Yummy on your home grown fresh berries - we go to farm pick every year for a bunch, lucky you. Have a wonderful day.

  15. Congrats on making it to 100,000 - no small feat. My Hyundai Accent, which I bought brand new in Nov 2002, now has 25,500 miles. It is pretty reliable and in good condition. I drive it to the doctor, dentist, hair stylist, etc., but most of the time, it sits in my garage. I have no intention of selling it, because Lisa needs it when she is here from the mainland. It is handy to have 2 cars, David's and mine.

  16. I was gonna say ... 100,000 miles is 13 years? You don't drive much, esp. for living out west. Anyway, congrats., and I'm betting youll have that Honda for another 13 years!

  17. Okay--now you have me wondering how many miles are on the old 92 Toyota Paseo (Dagan bought used in 2000). Your strawberries are looking juicy! :)

  18. Our garden is going wild! I can't believe how lush it is already. Im sure it will be a jungle when we get back from the road trip. I have to harvest all the lettuce before we leave. Maybe if I plant before we leave, I'll have the start of a second harvest when we get back.

  19. Congrats on hitting the six digit mark. It sounds like your little car is behaving well. Those strawberries look delicious.

Between kittens and internet problems I am just now getting caught up with everyone.

  20. I love that you documented this. I'm in the market for a car now, and a Civic is on my short list of considerations. Recommended by DJan?

  21. Those strawberries look super scrumptious!

I don't think any of our cars hit 100,000 miles before we had to donate them or they ended up in an accident and got totaled or passed on to a child.

I've heard Honda Civics are terrific cars.
