A bit of this, a bit of that

Still getting used to mirror image
Since the successful move into the new apartment, we are STILL having situations like the one in the picture: where the drawer is supposed to be, another one has taken its place. Smart Guy put the utensils in the first drawer as you see them, and was astonished when he opened it later and saw what he had done, without noticing! The second picture shows where they belong. Isn't it amazing what we THINK we see when we open a drawer? I really had to laugh at that one.
Finally! An eggplant
I had two Asian eggplant starts that I bought when I first started the garden. One of them just withered and died, so I pulled it out, but this one looked a bit better. And look! It's not much of an eggplant, but there are more blossoms and I'm hoping for the best. Not going to exactly feed us much, but I was so pleased to see that I finally had some kind of fruit from that plant.

And my friend Judy and I just returned from seeing Arbitrage, a new movie with Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon. Not exactly what you might call an uplifting movie, because the gist of it is that if you are rich enough, and smart enough, you can get away with just about anything. However, this is the best work that Gere has done in years, and Susan Sarandon was wonderful but not a central character. If Richard does not earn at least an Academy Award nomination for this work, something is wrong with the way they do things. He was simply wonderful. Engaging, totally outside the moral world that anybody but the super-rich live in, and completely believable. I loved it. Not my favorite movie of all time, but well worth seeing.

Well, that's my "bit of this, bit of that," and I am happily drinking my glass of red wine as I write this. Yesterday I had one of the best days of skydiving I've had for awhile, and although the weather was perfect for more of the same, I was sated and happy to be doing something else with my day. After I finish my glass of wine, I'm heading out to water my garden with hopes that eggplant will continue to grow!
:-)

  2. It's good to hear someone else out there is putting things in the wrong drawer also. I'm not alone!

  3. At least they were in a drawer! I have put stuff in the fridge.
I am sure the mirror image thing will work itself out in due time:)

  4. I just love this post. I feel something in your voice....Life is good, isn't it? I find those mirrored living arrangements fascinating... :) And that movie sounds intriguing. I'm so glad you told us about it.

  6. The flavor from garden grown stuff is a way beyond what you would buy in a store. It keeps me growing a garden year after year. I can't stand store bought tomatoes.
So I'm sure you'll do the garden think next year.

  7. I'm putting the movie in my Netflix queue.

  8. We found that movie on Comcast On Demand Friday night so we watched it. I had heard from a review that viewers find themselves rooting for the bad guy instead of the police, and it's true. I guess the Grere character had just enough saving graces that he was quite likable.
    Congrats on the eggplant!

  9. I love the photo of the two drawers. It is really amazing what we do on automatic pilot, isn't it? I feel less alone now. I moved a kitchen trash can at least four years ago. I still find myself going to the old spot without thinking.

    That eggplant is quite impressive.

  10. Oh the drawer is funny but understandable. It sounds like you had a lovely weekend. That movie sounds interesting and that eggplant quite lovely. You'll have to let us know how it tastes.

  11. That's funny about the drawers. It is amazing how our minds will play tricks on us when it comes to things like that. Eventually you'll both get used to new locations.

That is kind of a scrawny looking eggplant. Maybe the new blooms will produce better looking ones.

  12. It is so encouraging to read your post and the comments as I am obviously not alone in my lack of concentration when I put things away.

  13. I love Richard Gere AND Susan Sarandon, so really, what could be wrong with this movie?!! Nothing, in my book. As for the drawer scenario, I call that HALFheimerz!!! Been there, done that. The eggplant is an unusual looking eggplant...I love eggplant Parmesan. Hope you get more from the plant that survived.

  15. Wine o'clock is a real boon. I love that you had a day of sky diving and that the eggplant has finally produced. This is something I have NEVER has any success with.
Re the drawers - we had our kitchen remodelled about ten years ago and I still sometimes reach for the knife block - where it used to be.

  16. Its funny, when you go into a strange kitchen and naturally assume where you think the silver is, glasses n dishes. I have made the mistake and then been right on. Looking forward to the movie on Netflix, as we do not have a movie theatre. Sounds like a must see and I do like R.G. Nice DJan to have a glass of red wine at the end of your day - good for the heart. Nice day of sky diving and growing eggplant and it looks like a good one too. I never buy tomatoes in store anymore - GROW R OWN - they r so sweet n delicious :)

  17. This and that and lots of beautiful mountain views in your posts last week. And an eggplant...

  18. Dear DJan, thanks for sharing this and that! I sometimes wonder where my mind is as my hands do something when I'm operating on autopilot--as your husband did.

The Kansas City Star did a review yesterday of Arbitrage. That reviewer also thought that Gere should at least get an Oscar nomination. It's a move I hope to see. Thanks for your sharing your enjoyment of it.

    Peace.

  19. Gorgeous eggplant! Arbitrage is already on my list. Gere is one of the most overlooked actors. He's terrific in everything.

  20. Uh oh. My hubby hates Richard Gere (I tell him he's confusing the actor with some roles he's played) but I can watch it on On Demand sometime. Love the drawer mix-up. It would be easy to do, but I bet Smart Guy was surprised he made that mistake.

  21. I just love Richard Gere...can't wait to see this one. Hoping for the best for that gorgeous eggplant...they're such a beautiful color...eggplants.

  22. My garden is done now. It is nice that yours is still growing!

  23. Love love love Richard Gere....and Susan as well.

Eggplant here was a late bloomer,. but then went really crazy...

glad you had a good skydiving day !!

  24. I loved how you described Richard Gere's performance, but you forgot to mention the most important thing - the man is totally HOT!

Now back to reality. Yesterday I planned my fall garden and I chose a Chinese Eggplant because it is supposed to have a thinner, less bitter skin. Not sure if that is true but I'll find out - if it produces. Yours looks like a purple cucumber!

  25. I was just reading a review about this movie-- Richard Gere got a rave!

And Susan Saradon-- She was in a movie I saw last week "Robot & Frank" that I enjoyed very much. Again, it was a smaller part but she was perfect for it.

  26. He is a good actor for sure. But the thought of the increasing there control of just about everything these days is wearing me down...;(

  27. I had that same "mirror image" thing going on when I switched classrooms a few years ago. I just moved next door, but everything was on opposite walls, so I spent the first year going to the wrong end of the classroom to write on the white board! I was surprised at how long it took me to get it "right"!n (Even after four years I still will get turned around!)

Glad you are able to relish your down time!

  28. I haven't seen the movie but I heard that there should be more characters in real life like the one that Susan Sarandon plays.

As for your drawers....some of mine are black holes!

  29. Red wine sounds so wonderful. Every time I visit your blog it makes me want to skydive. I dream about it all the time ;)

  30. The wildflowers you see on your hikes are outstanding – I have never seen so many lupines. Your garden looks so beautiful. Couldn’t you place pine straw or black garbage bags between the plants to stop the weeds? You hike in such wondrous landscape – snow, mountains, lakes, etc. that I don’t think you could move now in a flat state – you would miss the mountains too much.

The movie with Richard Gere looks interesting. I have not been back to watch a movie since we saw the Intouchables – which you said you saw too – you remember I had placed the trailer for the movie on my post of July 27? When it comes in DVD I’ll buy a copy for sure.

  31. Yes, it's amazing how we get used to keeping things a certain way, I'm not a lover of change.
    The eggplant is growing !
Won't be a film I would take time out to watch, I do like Richard Gere though :)

  32. I'm so glad you had a happy and SAFE sky diving day. I've heard about that movie. Richard Gere has always been one of my favorite actors. The drawer thing is hilarious. It's what my husband might have done. My son takes after him, but my daughter is an expert organizer. :-)

  33. By the way, we like grilled eggplant with a little soy sauce. ;-)

  34. I laughed at the drawer thing since we went through the whole where shall we put it dilemma when we moved to this apartment. And when there's two, you have to negotiate! I like to picture you sitting in your new digs sipping a glass of wine. I'm doing the same thing in Italy and savoring life.

  35. Yes I know what it feels like to change homes and mirror image! I once moved from one house to another, which was exactly the same, but the other way round. It felt so odd to start with. Do you like your new home? Does it face north or south? So glad to hear that your egg plant gave some fruit.

  36. I love eggplant parmigiana the way Romano's Macaroni Grill prepares it. One of my favorite meals!

  37. That's so funny about habits that are hard to break.
    Your eggplant looks good!!
I am always surprised that Richard Gere takes roles of such immoral, plain-no-good people when he's supposed to be so spiritual and all. Puzzlement to me.
Glad all is going well in your new abode and in your life, my friend. :):)
