A day without internet

It's been a long time since I've used a rotary dial phone like this one. I've grown so accustomed to being constantly and completely connected all the time, without wires. My cellphone is only turned off when hiking in the wilderness where coverage is spotty or nonexistent. With the move I'm going through right now, I will be a day without internet access, although I will still have my cellphone, so I won't be completely without connection. Plus if I need a fix I can always go into town and use some free internet.

It's actually possible that it won't be as bad as I fear, but I'm not optimistic. The move will culminate tomorrow, September 2, so I made arrangements with Comcast to make the switch. When I woke this morning and went to get online and read my blogs, email, and news, I got a message that I needed to activate my new account. To do that, I needed my account number. However, as I learned after more than an hour on the phone with an agent, when you move (even if it's just around the corner), you create a new account. And that number had not yet been assigned! Okay, what happens now? I was able to finally get a representative who managed to reconnect my new account to this address, but who knows what will happen tomorrow? Sigh. I've got a tech coming by sometime in the morning, but it's not clear to me whether he will be forced to create yet ANOTHER account with a new number. In the meantime, I figured I'd better say hello, read my blogs and email while I still can. More to come... sometime.

I long for a normal life again, and although I know it's coming somewhere in the near future (at least I hope so), I can barely sleep I'm so tired. By the middle of next week I'm hoping that I will have finished finding things again. (Where did I put my cellphone charger?)

  5. Oh I sympathise. However you must put your energies into your move for now. We'll all be here when you get back connected.
I shall be in the air myself in a few days time, also disconnected!!

  6. Would you consider a day without the internet to be a day of "net loss"?

    Just wondering.

Hope the rest of the moving and adjusting goes well.

  7. Good thing you're not moving across the country! Now it's to change all addresses. Good luck with all the nitty gritty.

  8. Dear DJan, I hope you remember in the midst of all this packing and unpacking and sorting and putting away to be gracious to yourself. Take time--often--to sit down and gaze at your world beyond the windows. Sip whatever is your favorite beverage. Put your feet up on a box and lean back and visualize yourself in your bed in your new home. Be good to yourself and to your body. Peace.

  9. Dee, bless her heart is right as she so very often is. Be kind to yourself in this chaos. It will resolve itself sooner than you think it will. And resolve itself for the better. Sending cyber hugs.

  10. It will be over before you know it. And you'll be back to hiking up mountains, jumping out of planes, and tending your garden. :) :)

  11. Hang in there. It will all get done and it will all be over soon. Remember when you used to travel around the world? Sort of set in your ways now, aren't you. :)

Hope the rest of the move goes well!

  16. Moving is such fun! I do hate dealing with setting up new 'utilities.' I hope it's soon over for you and you're happily back on the hiking trails.

  17. I feel bereft without the internet. I was without it for 8 days and was only reconnected last Monday for it to go off again on Friday. Apparantly the phone lines have been vandalised which means it is going to take some time to get it up and running again. There's over 2000 houses affected. At the moment I have to either go to my daughter's house or find a local wi-fi outlet.

  18. My daughter moved into a new place two weeks ago and the technicians from Brands Mart have been out 3 times to "re-install" her television. The picture is still fuzzy....thank heaven her internet service switched over without a glitch.

Be careful, it's a cruel world out there! Catch the bus to town and sip a coffee - preferably at an internet cafe.

  19. Yikes. Unconnected. It's strange how we've all become on these new technologies...

  20. oh good heavens do I know how you feel
it seems to me that the more that technology is supposed to make things easier the more complex it gets
I hope you get a good tech at some point
I got a bunch of dullards with attitudes
I do have to remember that my son does installations and moves and he's sweet and charming and kind
    and good looking
and he likes older women ;)
and knows what he's doing to boot!

    hugs
the new place will be home real soon

  21. I'm sure things will be back to normalcy sooner than soon and prayerfully the move will be an easy one too with many people helping on the side.

By the way, I would like us to follow each other in the future and I would like to get to know you more. Would you like us to follow each other?

  22. I love this mountainous background you have. All blue and beautiful.

As for your move, you had me scared a bit there for a sec....I was thinking "OMGoodness, she's moving and all the work in her garden...and moving out?" Then, I read further to catch up [by the way, I love the Monday hike photos!!] and find out you're just moving from one apt. to another in the same complex. Phew!!! You had me going....

Well, I've been trying to catch up on bloggin' buddies today and at the end of my comments I usually put out that I hope your holiday weekend went well....but I'll forgo that comment and just add "Hope your move goes smoothly".

  23. By now I hope your internet woes are over and you are reconnected. Moving always brings additional headaches besides moving heavy stuff. At least you had your phone to get you fix.

What a busy Labor Day Weekend you had.

  24. Hopefully you are up and running by the time you read this comment. I cannot believe how much time is spent dealing with utilities after a move. Cable is worst, followed by AT&T for landline!

  25. It's funny how at a loss I feel when I lose Internet connection. I've gotten so spoiled.

Your new header is wonderful, by the way!

  26. Well I think all must have gone well because today is the 7th and all is over. Hope you got rest too.
I got back yesterday, woke up at 3 am in Toronto time but head and body decided it was still Europe! I got up and ate breakfast and stared reading blogs and posting. Likely will nap later and hope some long walks will tire me enough to get back on the local track.
