March haircut

In my last post I mentioned that I could tell from the picture Ward took of me on Thursday that I really needed a haircut. So yesterday I got myself down to the local salon and got 'er done. She cut it pretty short in the back, which I appreciate, because in two months it begins to look a lot like, well, the "before" picture. Although someone else might not think it looks too long, it's obvious to me. Smart Guy took this picture for me so I could illustrate how I think my hair should always stay. But you know, it never does. No matter what I want it to do, it continues to grow! Fortunately for me, I have finally found a hairdresser who is (a) not expensive, and (b) gives me what I ask for. She left the bangs a little long, but I asked for them. My new eyeglasses are also a plus. Since they have transition lenses, you can tell we didn't have much sunlight in that first outdoor picture to darken them. I love not having to think about sunglasses; they are just there, or not.
As long as I'm on the subject of hair, I thought of this picture I took on our Thursday hike of Al's curls. My grandmother used to use something to create Marcel waves in her hair and after looking it up (hence the link), I found it was a style that was all the rage during the 1920s. I think I saw it in the recent movie "The Artist" as well. The natural waves that Al has (he's letting his hair grow a bit) would have made many a young flapper envious!

I am really going to miss Picnik, which I used to create the collage of the first two photos. Although it's going away in mid-April, it's still available for use until then. I know I should be trying to duplicate what I did using Pixelmator, but it's not so easy. I have to learn HOW and now that I've let the program languish on my desktop for a month or so, I need to begin all over again. In Picnik, I just uploaded the two pictures and was even able to use the airbrush on my neck. At first I tried to remove the wrinkles, but it looked very weird, so I opted instead to use a nice little softening technique with the airbrush. These same tools are also available in Pixelmator, but not as an editing tool called "airbrush." So, as long as I have it available to me, I'll continue to use Picnik.

Today I went for a six-mile walk with the Fairhaven walking group. Although it rained all day long yesterday, we had a beautiful DRY walk this morning. I learned that during February, Bellingham received more than four inches of rain. We had only a week or so of dry days; all the rest (20, to be exact) had some rain. Ah, but it's March, finally! Although our winter has been on the mild side, I am looking forward to the beautiful sunny dry weekends ahead. I will also hopefully get a chance to make my first skydive of 2012 sometime in the near future. Have a great weekend, and I'll be "seeing" you soon!
:-)

  4. I love your cut. I wish my hair had a bit of natural curl. When the weather is humid (and just about any time, really) my hair is straight and limp. Walked six miles, eh? I have GOT to get moving!

  5. I like your cut. I'm thinking of getting my cut short like yours. I'm tired of fooling with it.

  6. I like your new haircut, Djan! Yes, I imagine the pains of short hair would be the 'growing out so fast' part. My son hates to have his hair cut so it's a case of getting it cut really short so it gives him extra time until the next haircut.

Al's natural waves are nice too.

  7. You have a pixie cut and you are so darn cute. This is March now and we will probably get more snow but in a couple months I will riding my bike around town with shorts on.

  8. Love the haircut, and I LOVE the natural gray hair. It took a long time for my hair to lose enough color to look gray instead of just . . . dull. I thoroughly enjoy it now.

  9. I am not as advanced as you are with the air brush and all that. I have photoshop but use it primarily for sizing the photos and restoring the color in old photos. Whatever works!

David and my daughters always tell me my hair is too short for my round face. But I like it short because I don't like to style it every time I wash it.

  10. The new do makes you look much younger. haircuts for women are a big deal...more complicated. For me, I've lost enough hair on top so that my rooster tail is gone!
That much rain would be a problem.

  12. Oh my goodness, I hadn't thought of those waves in years. I remember hairdressers pinching those waves into women's hair. Amazing.

I get my hair cut every four weeks whether it needs it or not but it always needs it. I really should go for every three weeks to have it just right all the time.

  13. As you know, I have short hair too, and it really bugs me when it gets too long. I have it trimmed every five weeks and make the next appointment before leaving the salon.
Your hair looks great, and your smile is gorgeous!
I enjoyed a walk in the sunshine today too, but it sure was windy. Thank goodness for short hair!

  14. I have to agree you are beautiful. And I am happy that you had a dry walk. In my current state of gross unfitness it would be a six mile marathon.

  15. I like your fresh cut DJan, it looks great.

I remember an aunt of mine that wore her hair in the Marcel waves. She used some sort of metal clamp thing to set the waves. It looked like torture to me as a small child.

I hope you get some sunny dry weekends soon. It was sunny here today but very windy.

  16. I like both before n after, however am most in favour of the new cut - I think in most cases our haircuts or styles exibit some of our personality - You are on the side of mysterious and elegant and if you have looked at mine, its just got SAUCY written all over it. You have a wonderfully warm smile DJan - that is the first thing i noticed.
We did not have a 14 mile hike yesterday cause someone above us turned the fire hose on and it came down like that all day, hence the skating rink in the back yard this morning. As my Dad would say - its a wee bit "slippy" out today.
Have a great day. Smiles n Chuckles :)

  17. If each photo was standing alone, each would be thought lovely, but I have to agree the shorter haircut brightens and suits you beautifully, DJan.

  18. I like your new haircut D-Jan. It suits you. I have also had my hair cut, but I'm not brave enough yet to put up a picture of it. Maybe it's the time of year. Like sheep we long to be shorn! However today it is snowing and raining here and my neck feels cold.
I have used Picnik and liked it. Now I'm struggling to learn CorelDraw!
Men always get the best curls don't they!

  19. Actually I like your hair long or short. However, the short version is really stylishly done. I'd love to be able to go to your hair stylist. It's perfect!

  20. You look great in both pictures to me! As long as you're happy, I'm happy. ;)

I remember seeing those waves in old movies. I always wondered how they got their hair to do that...and here Al's just grows that way! I will look for that when I finally get to see The Artist.

Your computer talk is like Greek to me--LOL! ;) Glad you had a nice dry walk. Hope it's a wonderful week!!

  21. Great haircut and great walking! I'm still running 3 times a week to keep up the gains from the half marathon training. Good for us!

  22. Love them both...in the process of going from my always short cuts to midlength now...just because it softens up my face a little. Or I am lazy or something. lol

  23. my Nana called them finger waves

I wish I could have short hair but I have a very large head and a wide face and I fear I'd look like the Dad from Family Guy

    you look beautiful

I've been playing with iPiccy.com and it's not bad
I'm really going to miss Picnik too

thanks for the wonderful comment, you always make me feel appreciated

  24. I really, really like the new 'do'....very much so. And I must say, I love the beautiful silver. So becoming.

  25. I used to always have my hair permed and loved curls. But eventually I stopped those smelly salon visits. Now I only wish I didn't need to color my hair. There was a time when I did it just for fun. The good old days.

  26. You look beautiful, my dear. You always do. I tend to keep my hair long. I've never permed or coloured it. At least not yet.

  27. Your new haircut looks so good. You are very photogenic DJan and always look good in photographs. I read your past posts and I had to read who was the lady on the right – I did not recognize Jane Fonda. Her operations took the characteristics off her face, but she does look good.
Last year someone mentioned a program called PhotoScape but I had Picnic that I used once in a while so I did not learn it - just downloaded it. It may do the same thing as Picnic. You can Google PhotoScape – I think it is a free download.

  29. I like the hair cut! And glasses. I too have transitional lens that darken in the bright light.

I will miss Picnik too! What a bummer! Are they joining with Google? If you find another good program, please share it with me, will you please? I will let you know if I find something...

I remember those waves. My Mom used to have some aluminum clips which were about three inches long and claw teeth. She would put them in my hair when it was wet...I HATED IT...she also put those spoolies and bobby pin X's....hated those too!

    The winds are BLOWIN' today....

  30. Everyone is right-the haircut looks great. I have to get mine cut regularly now that I've gone short again. It seems like it gets sloppy after a month. Speaking of which, I really need to go get a trim. It's not as easy as it used to be since I seem to always have the kids with me. Connor's not so good at sitting there quietly while I get a new 'do. :)
I think with a little exploring you'll be happy enough with Pixelmator. It's really not that difficult to do what you're talking about doing; it's more a matter of figuring out what they've named certain features.
I want to thank you for your extremely kind comment; it was a bright spot in a tough day. You really do have a gift for making a person feel special.

  31. Hair cuts can give a lift. you look smashing:)
My haircut last week was a bit too short. My usual hairdresser was away and her sub did a number on my head. Thank goodness that my hair now grows very fast. By next week it will be bearable.
Still wishing to be more active like you but wishing is not motivating me.
