Tune wedgy

A little dab'll do ya
I've got an earworm! I'm not sure where I first heard this term, maybe when I read Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. I even thought I had written a post about it, but apparently not. The search engine didn't find it, anyway.

If you look at the Wikipedia link in the previous paragraph, you'll find that there are several terms for a song that gets stuck in your head, and the one that made me laugh the most is "tune wedgy." But the "official" term is an earworm. It is derived from a German word, Ohrwurm, a portion of a song that continues to repeat compulsively within one's mind.

The hideous song that has been going through my own head since last night (did I dream it?) is the catchy tune that I must have heard a hundred or more times long, long ago. I haven't actually heard it again for such a long time, and it amazes me that I STILL know all the words:
Brylcreem, a little dab'll do ya
Brylcreem, you'll look so debonair.
Brylcreem, the gals will all pursue ya,
Simply rub a little in your hair!
The link also gives some tips as to how one might get rid of an earworm, which I find to be a bit dubious. I thought maybe writing about my dilemma would help; but they suggest the following:
The best way to eliminate an unwanted earworm is to simply play a different song. Supposedly, some songs are better for this purpose than others, such as the theme song to 'Gilligan's Island' or 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'.
Yeah, right. Now look what I've done: I've probably caused dozens of tune wedgies in the minds of my followers. But... it's working! Now I'm hearing something else... which is being crowded out by the Brylcreem ad. A heavy conflict is going on in my brain, and I'm not sure which will win out. Why couldn't I find something else to replace it with? Ah, I've got it: I've found the ultimate tune wedgy:
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small small world
That did it! Everything else is gone now, just the repetition of that phrase, over and over and over...
:-)

  1. You do realize there are forms of dementia that hear music all the time and nothing will stop it? Are you sure you're okay?

  2. This happens to me all the time when I hang out with the grandkids...and have to listen to all their catchy kids songs. Or when my oldest son has a tune playing on his laptop...and later he catches me singing it. We call this Inception like the movie...and we joke that we've been incepted with a tune that just won't stop on it's continuous loop until the next tune comes up ( he's only 23 and far from suffering dementia)...but we're careful where we leave off. Better to have good music looping around in the brain than let's say the latest news loop that gets played over and over on TV.
This was pretty funny post...I like the tune wedgy name...it's gonna stick.
Hope your flu shot ordeal has passed uneventfully. Sending you my brightest light and love. xxoo

  5. Aaargh. I had never come across the term ear worm (though I am familiar with the manifestation) and now it has popped up in at least three blogs I read in under a week. And why is it that they are usually jingles rather than music. And virtually never anything you are proud to admit has room in your head.

  6. Soooo funny! I have never heard the term earworm or tune wedgy! But I have suffered from this condition all my life--LOL!

I am old enough to remember the Brylcreem song. I had to google it because I thought the last line was...they love to get their fingers in your hair.

I think I only remember the line because my dad had that greased back hair and it looked yucky to touch so I didn't understand why women would want to put their fingers in it--LOL!

Now I have It's A Small World going round in my head--ROFL!! You really gave me a giggle today...and earworms! :):)

  8. Yes those earworms! I get them all the time becuse I listen to lots of music. I agree that you get rid of one ear worm and you replace with another.
    The brycreem commercial was annoying.

  10. I get earworms alot! I just take it as a warning that my mind is too idle and I should be thinking about something important. But sometimes I'd rather not do that either. So then I try to move to a new tune.

  11. Thank you very much. I now have "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" running around my brain! :p

Happens to me all the time too! Usually with really bad songs so it's doubly annoying! :p

    PS: love the term earworm!

That's the last old commercial that gave me an ear worm not long ago, Did it help you with the Brylcream worm?

My hubby and I trade earworms all the time, some are annoying others are fun for a short time.

    Fun post DJan!

  13. The times I have a particular song going on and on in my head I have had to listen to other music and it may take a few tunes but it helps. I like the tune wedgy thin. I have to tell hubby that one.

  14. Certain songs come in and then don't want to leave. It becomes disconcerting until I deliberately push it out with either another song or life just takes over in some other form.

"It's a small world" is trying to sneak in now.... :)

  15. Yep, I've had those stinkin' ear worms before. Like the time I went into church singin'..."Play that Funky Music White Boy." 'Just happen to be the first song I heart that Sunday mornin'. Heeehehhee!

Have a blessed day sweetie!!! :o)

  18. I'm not so familiar with the American earworms, but I can confirm that we have plenty of our own over here. I've been known to say loudly 'oh no! not that song - now I'll have it in my head all day and sure enough, I do. Funny!

  19. Ha.. funny post, DJan. I'll bet the Brylcreem jingle is back in your head by now. After all, didn't some of their later ads say "I came back" "I came back" "I came back to Brylcreem!"
    ("And we're glad they did")
