Abundance

Ahhh. My spirit is filled with the sense of abundance, which has been helped along by my full tummy after eating a delicious cantaloupe from the market. And this picture typifies the Bellingham Farmers' Market this morning: fruits and vegetables galore, with summertime flowers around every corner.
These big beautiful dahlias don't appear until midsummer around here, and I think they are some of the most magnificent flowers I've ever seen. There is nothing quite as elegant (to me) as a perfect rose, but the dahlia bursts out like fireworks, a joyous shout of amazing colors. The market was crowded today, although the low clouds and breeze made a light jacket necessary for most of us. You can tell the natives from recent transplants: light t-shirt or blouse with nary a sign of discomfort, while here and there you might see someone walking around with a parka and gloves! I was in the middle.
The buskers were in fine form at the market today. I hadn't seen this group before, playing simple but catchy tunes, probably their own. Their sign let me know I was listening to the "Rattletrap Ruckus," a very appropriate name. Although you can't see the accordion player very well, or the bass "broom," they all played together quite professionally. (In case you are not familiar with the term "busker," this Wikipedia link tells you its meaning.)

I took eight books back to the local bookstore to receive a credit on my account and walked out with four new ones. I cannot help myself: I only intended to get one, but they reach out and grab me. It's out of my hands. Another reason for feeling abundant: four new books to read!

I will be really happy when the pool at the YMCA opens up again on the 15th; I think it would have helped me recover more quickly from last weekend's lower back sprain. This morning I was able to walk with the Fairhaven walking group, but I'm thinking I'll probably skip the skydiving tomorrow. Although it would probably be okay, it was while I was packing up that I wrenched it, and I don't want to take the chance that I'll hurt it again. Next weekend will be soon enough, I tell myself.

I can always change my mind if I wake up tomorrow totally pain-free and rarin' to go...
:-)

  1. Sounds like a wonderful morning. And I chuckled at intending to pick up one book and walking out with four. I do that way too often.
I am hoping for a pain free day for you tomorrow (and every day).

  5. I also enjoyed your market photos. I do love the farmers markets in the PNW. I also get giddy when I come upon a music group like the one in your photo. I love those characters that play drums that are nothing but plastic utility buckets turned upside down.

Yes, I think a one day break from sky diving might be a good idea.

  6. One of my favorite buskers was a group from somewhere in South America playing pan flutes...they were marvelous, at the Arcata Farmers market...

I love FM too...and I love the abundance and prosperity I see around me every day...

Take a break, mama...don't hurt the hurt... xoxox

  7. Looks like you have a great farmers market. I wish you could give us some cool weather. I don't like it hot...even our hot. It's about 20 C here and that's enough.

  8. I hope your back stays healthy, DJan. What a coincidence! David and I went to the KCC Farmers' Market this morning for the first time and enjoyed it. I posted some photos today and will post more as the days go by.

  9. Lovely photos. Those dahlias are amazing! Glad you're still feeling well, and probably wise to save the skydiving for another week, just to be on the safe side.
It's so hard to choose just one book!

  10. You do have an abundant life, hiking, swimming, lots of friends, a beautiful environment in which to live, a great farmers market, and all those other active, educated, lively seniors to spend time with.

  11. Your farmer's market looks like a great place to visit and so colorful. The farmer's market in my area is open only on Friday and Saturday but it is a very busy place all year because it is indoors. The outside markets are especially nice during the summer. Street musicians add greatly to the experience at your market.

  12. I would really like to visit your farmers market! Thosew photos are gorgeous. I, too, am always excited by a new book. We (the kids and I) went to watch the band play at the local Harley dealership yesterday. It was funny to watch Jordan jumping and twirling to the music while all of these intimidating men in black leather looked on with indulgent expressions. A couple of them gave her money to put in the tip jar and smiled at me as though I had provided them with unexpected entertainment. I'm just glad others could appreciate her unselfconscious joy!

  13. Yes, those dahlias are a feast for the eyes!
I have never heard the term "buskers" and enjoyed reading the link--thanks! They look like they were having a grand time!
Only one more week to go and you can be back swimming! Take care of that back! And enjoy your books. :):)

  15. All the goodies at your farmers' market look delicious DJan. The buskers sound like a lot more fun than the entertainers we have had at our market lately, they need to jazz it up a little. It's 90 here today with a light breeze, almost perfect.

So what new books did you get?

  16. The market truly is spilling forth with abundance and so is your wonderful post. I'd love to visit that market. I too love dahlias. I photographed so many when we went to Alaska and Victoria, B.C. I think I take the photos because I've never had the nerve to try and grow them.

Take care of that back. What are you reading?
