Sunny Saturday

What a beautiful day! I got up and left the house at 7:30 am to get myself a latte before heading off for a nice 5.2-mile walk with the Fairhaven walkers in the early morning sunlight at Lake Padden. Then I quickly headed up to the Farmers' Market to catch a few pictures before going off to the Y for a swim. This sweet rose caught my eye, nestled among the other flowers, and I couldn't resist a quick snapshot. The market was filled with people right away, since it was such a gorgeous day.
As I sauntered past these delicious looking tomatoes, the vendor offered me a taste. I should have known better. No sooner had I tasted one than I had to buy some. You cannot imagine how sweet and remarkably tasty they are! The balloon man was setting up his scene to entertain us. He made this "hat" for himself while we watched, and half the kids couldn't help but ask for one.
He said that the local newspaper had itemized a hundred things for people to do in Bellingham, and he was listed as #51. He's a lot of fun, too. As I checked my watch and realized that I was getting hungry, it was only 11:00 am, but the the smells wafting through the market, coming from all around me, made me realize that I'd better get over to the Y and work out before I had my lunch.
I managed to walk away from these wonderful bread sticks, but it took some effort. I made it over to the gym in time to get a lane in the pool all to myself and swim a half mile. By the time I got home and made myself some lunch, it was almost time to head over to the theater to see Larry Crowne with my friend Judy. The movie has not received good reviews, but we both enjoyed it. It really helps to have your expectations lowered when you head out for a movie, then you can't be disappointed. Of course, any movie that has Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks can't be all bad, which is what he figured. We were right.

Last week we saw Midnight in Paris, and I enjoyed it while Judy didn't. You really do need to be a Woody Allen fan to appreciate it, but it was also a feel-good movie that had a happy ending. Have you seen either one? What did you think of them?
:-)

  1. What a day! You really keep busy! However being busy and occupied is a very healthy way to live your life.
Have a great rest of the weekend!

  2. What a lovely day. Thanks for the pictures of the rose and the tomatoes (drool) etc. I, too love swimming - and it is so much better to have a lane to yourself. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Here we have wind and sleet. It won't snow here (too low) but it isn't nice outside.

  4. I would think you must have been starving by the time you had your lunch, with all you did before then!!!
I haven't seen either movie. The Tom Hanks one sounds like something we will watch ON Demand, when it is released on cable.

  5. Someone else did a review of Larry Crowne and they said they really liked it. I agree that anything with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts can't be bad. I'm adding it to my Netflix list! I'm not a Woody Allen fan, but I like happy endings. :-)

I'm also not a grape tomato fan, BUT I do love grape tomatoes that are sweet. The ones I've had lately weren't great. I need to get myself over to your neck of the woods.

  6. Sounds like you had good weather over your way today. Those grape tomatoes look delicious. I didn't make it to the Farmers' market today but next week is our onion festival, all the vendors will turn out for that.

I haven't seen either of those movies, maybe when they hit On Demand. The next one I really want to see (this gives you an idea of my strange taste in movies) is Cowboys & Aliens. Any movie with Harrison Ford has to be good, IMHO.

  7. I haven't watched a movie in months! Just not a movie buff, but David is one. He sees 2 movies on Netflix plus one at the theater every week. Sheesh! I haven't got the patience -- unless it's a movie made from a book I enjoyed reading -- such as Eat Pray Love. Glad you had such a great day, DJan.

  8. Enjoyed walking with you, DJan. I could have made a meal of the fresh bread and grape tomatoes! Mine in the garden are still 'green'!

  10. It sounds like a wonderful day. any time at a farmer's market is time well spent, and your willingness to do so much to stay active is amazing.

I haven't seen either movie, but the trailer for Larry Crowne included Ms. Roberts trademark laugh and although it's a nice laugh it feels like it's become requisite and now both actors look like they've become caricatures of themselves. I will give it a chance though. I am not a Woody Allen fan, but I'm also never disappointed in his films. Thanks, Jan, for your reviews and for sharing your day with us.

  11. I am always amazed by you! You hike and swim before lunch--wow! Always love your photos, too. The balloon man sounds like a delightful character. :)

I'm already waiting for Larry Crowne to come out on DVD so I can get it on Netflix. I don't care a whit about the reviews if Tom Hanks is in it. But I have never been a Woody Allen fan--him or the vast majority of his movies. I do like a happy ending, tho--so it's a maybe on that one. ;)

  13. Wow, I don't know if I'd have been able to resist that bread...Your Farmers Market always look so fabulous! I've wondered about Larry Crown-it looks interesting. I guess I'll watch it when it comes to disc:)

  14. Your market is so colorful. I love the shades of color in fruits and veggies. Having a sunny day is a bonus. I haven't seen either movie but I always enjoy Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts; Woody Allen, not so much. His humor doesn't appeal to me. Fluff keeps me cheerful so I would choose Tom Hanks any day.

  15. The flowers are too pretty to be real. I looked at the photo and the first thing I thought was they were artificial flowers. This is such a gorgeous photo.

You have self control beyond belief. I could not head out on an empty stomach and get a coffee. I would not be feeling well by 11:00 and there you were pushing your lunch time even later.

You do live an active and interesting life. I hope you know what an inspiration you are to those of us who follow your blog.

  16. Oh how I wish we had a farmers market like that close by. We saw Midnight in Paris last week also. It was better than most stuff on TV so I enjoyed it as well. Without sounding like namedropping though it brought back wonderful memories of our "retirement trip" to Paris a few years back :)

  20. I LOVE the picture of the rose. In fact I always enjoy your pictures of the street market very much. I could not have walked past that bread without a taste!

  21. We arrived late to our market Sunday. It was closing. But it was kind of interesting to see everyone packing up. Some people got some free vender food out of the deal.

  22. I haven't seen either one, but not being a Woody Allen fan, I probably won't see the Midnight in Paris one. I have been wanting to see Green Lantern but have given up - it's probably left our theatre by now. Yes, Green Lantern! :-)

I love your Farmer's Market. So much nicer than ours here in Reno. The one at Tahoe is very scenic, but now that we are not there every day it's hard to visit.

  23. Thanks for taking me along on your Saturday adventures. Those tomatoes look delicious. Thanks for the movie reviews too. I do want to see both...but will wait for the DVD's to come out. I have to agree with Teresa...Roberts and Hanks are beginning to look caricature like to me as well. Scary Hollywood style aging.
    Have a great week!
