John is wearing eyeglasses and earglasses |
So, just for fun, I went on Amazon thinking that maybe I could find one of those old-style ear trumpets that I could bring in for a joke. Instead, I found this online: Earglasses. I bought the set of two and brought them into the coffee shop. John is wearing them in the picture. Basically, they work the same as if you cup your curved hand over your ear. He said they amplify his own voice just fine, but they don't help much otherwise.
Interestingly, he applied for hearing aids through his supplemental Medicare insurance, and they said he might qualify. Well, he does, and soon he will actually be fitted for real hearing aids! Hearing loss is serious, and it will be really interesting to see how it works for him.
If you would like to see how your hearing stacks up, here's an online test you can give yourself. There are others, but this one appealed to me. I just found it a few minutes ago, so I'm off to test my own hearing right now.
:-)
P.S. My test: Not too bad for my age, but left ear misses high tones.
Good for John! Hearing is important! We just tested and both scored 100%. Thanks for the link! :)
ReplyDeleteI know I need hearing aids, but the expense makes me delay. So many people I talk to are not happy with their aids. But I need to do something soon. And it is high sounds I cannot hear anymore...
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that John will get some hearing aids. Deafness can be so isolating.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that John will be getting his hearing aids. My husband has just purchased his second set. He's worn them for the last six years. They are so important, but they are costly. Hearing loss is as Elephant's Child said, so isolating.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who has digital aids, and they work well. He has severe hearing loss from Vietnam. Bob and I both have loss but not enough yet for aids. We need to be in the same room with each other, or we only know that the other person is talking, not what they're saying. A couple of our Grands speak so softly, I have to remind them to talk a bit louder for Grammy! Hope John likes his new aids and will be able to eavesdrop with abandon.
ReplyDeletegood for john! i hope that it reopens some of his everyday world. :)
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law just bought hearing aids. She was perturbed at first because she could hear her breathing, footsteps and the like. It took some getting used to but she likes them now. Expensive but so worth it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful news for John. My husband and I both took your hearing test, and sadly we are on 30% on the High Pitch Tones....and I just thought he had selected hearing loss :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing DJan so interesting.

I am "used to" my hearing aids now, so every day sounds don't bother me any more, but because of my high frequency
ReplyDeleteloss, I had to choose between settings that hissed or settings that can have a metallic rattle. I went with the rattle, which I hear mostly from my own voice when i talk loudly. So I guess my hearing aids are keeping my quiet too. :-). I'll wait until my six month check back to try any new adjustments.
I'm glad John is getting help.
So far, so good with my hearing. My mom is wearing expensive hearing aids, but even the best don't necessarily make it as clear as one would like. We'll see how far I get before I need aid.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby had hearing loss and he got some hearing aids a year ago. I should probably take the on line test because I think I'm getting deaf too.
ReplyDeleteI have hearing loss at some frequencies. I will have to get checked one of these days.
ReplyDeleteGlad he's getting hearing aids. When my husband needed them a few years ago we went to a regular hearing clinic and the price was around 6000.00 - crazy ridiculous. I searched around and found the EXACT same hearing aids at Costco for just under 2000.00 - still a lot - but the difference in price is amazing. And he is happily hearing all that is said now and especially enjoying the grandsons.
ReplyDeleteArt got this hearing aids through the military and that was a real cost savings. Hearing tests are free at Costco and Sam's Club. I'm so glad Art has hearing aids now. He's finding it much easier to hear people in a crowded room and the TV doesn't have to be turned on as loud. Thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteI imagine socialising to be a nightmare if you have hearing loss. trying to take part in conversations that you can't follow is no joke. glad to hear art will be back up to speed with his hearing now.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I had a little high frequency hearing loss, but nothing serious. It is a shame that hearing aids are not covered by medicare. Just doesn't seem right.
ReplyDeleteI see a new trend coming, in ear glasses!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know that he will qualify for hearing aid. So much is missed without that sense. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteNow, I'm gonna go check out the link you provided.
All is normal [100%] except for high pitch in left ear [75%] Hmmmmm.
DeleteI know I have hearing loss but don't own headphones so couldn't take the test--LOL! Those earglasses are so funny.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to John. I would be very upset if I could no longer listen to music, since I used to play the violin.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad John is getting what he needs. Hearing aids are sooooo expensive. I took the test and have 15% loss in my left ear. Possibly it might need cleaning:)) Thanks for the test link.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your friend is going to get hearing aids. It will make life so much more enjoyable for him and everyone else!
