Buses and more

Regular bus, hybrid bus, and short bus
Today was the first day I rode the bus since I returned home. Yesterday I missed my usual exercise class because of a doctor's appointment to have my ears cleaned. And I can hear again! All that ear wax came right out with the proper tools, and the nurse gave me a lesson on how to keep it from building up again. The doctor said my left ear was completely blocked, but I already knew that; now my ears are fully functional again.
While I was gone, several of these hybrid buses were brought on line. Now we have regular buses, short buses, and hybrids. I got to ride the new bus both ways to town and back. They are definitely quieter with better pickup than the regular ones. I'm so pleased to live in a place that encourages recycling, bans single-use plastic bags in grocery stores, and provides hybrid buses.

My friend Judy and I went to see Beasts of the Southern Wild this weekend. It's been nominated for four academy awards; one of them is for Best Actress by Quevenzhané Wallis, who is only nine years old. She was indeed amazing, but the movie... I still don't know why it has garnered so much acclaim, since I found it to be rather confusing and really depressing. It's about a young girl who has lost her mother and is in the process of losing her father. The movie is told from her point of view, and reality and fantasy mix together in a way that confused me until I figured out that many of the scenes were in her mind. If you see it, let me know how you felt about it. Maybe it was just me.

In any event, it's nice to be getting back into the swing of my regular life, and it's REALLY nice to be able to hear again. I've got three books on my plate and will be getting involved in reading them any minute now. Thursday is my first hike in three weeks; fortunately it's rated "moderate" so it shouldn't be a problem for me. It will be so nice to be with my friends again!
:-)

  4. Good to see some options in buses are used there. We just have the biggest darn buses money can buy.

  5. I am not sure what you mean by single use bags. We always reuse the plastic ones. We pack lots of them in our suitcases for dirty underwear, dirty shoes and slippers, etc. Not to mention Rylan's soiled diapers and wet clothing.

Please let us know the correct way to get rid of ear wax. I am curious.

  6. I was really curious about what you would think of the movie when you mentioned it yesterday. Art and I both thought it was awful. You were nice in your review. We couldn't wait for it to end. We CANNOT understand why the critics like it so much. I thought something was wrong with us.

  7. You can hear again, that's great news. There has been talk of hybrid buses here but so far I haven't seen any. It would be a good thing for any city.

Your thoughts on the movie are interesting DJan, thanks for the review. I had heard it was somewhat depressing. I will probably watch it this weekend.

  8. Good review. Reminds me of a movie, who name I forget, where the guy came back and forto life over time to visit and marry his love... I was very confused throughout.....:) but was told by some commenters that if I'd read the book I would have understood!

  9. We have no buses here at all in this town - I walk or bicycle or take my motorbike and usually the car for groceries. I like your mixture of buses. I think every small town should have small buses - it would work. Lots of people I noticed take their groceries home in taxi's. Welcome back and good to hear you can hear :)

  10. Hybrid buses! Florida could use a fleet of them. Based o your review, I think we'll skip this movie.

  11. I love getting back to a normal routine. Glad you can hear again, too.

We seldom go to the movies and only to ones that will make me laugh. This one doesn't sound like one I'll go see.

  12. Well, that movie will not get on my 'to see' list...doesn't sound at all like something I would like.

Our city has several kinds of buses too, but I've never been on one. What I do like tho, is the fact that our bus system runs 24/7-365...before we moved here, the city buses in Tucson would not operated on the weekend or holidays. I could never understand the logic. Guess that's why I'm never elected for any city position. Right?

Oh and by the way, I just can't resist.....ready?

    Can you hear me now?

  13. So glad that your ear is better; I was worried about that. I know how uncomfortable that must have been for you.
I'm glad that you are home and back in the swing of things. Even though you were in a beautiful portion of our country (my prejudice for FL is noted)...I know that you are glad to be home. There's no place like home.
    Love,
    Jackie

  14. so glad you can hear again..can you share what the nurse told you to do? We don't have buses for people only school kids..big orange ones..fuel suckers I am sure. The nearest people bus is probably 90 miles away. I am sure if I ever took the bus I would get lost:)

  15. We have seen the movie. I was somewhat confused too, with the ice age animals approaching. But then the lifestyle of the delta "bathtub" people was very primitive, and folklore and modern science about climate change were intermixed.
It was an interesting movie, with emotional highs and lows, but certainly not an Oscar winner.

  16. I haven't seen the movie. I'm not too sure it is my cup of tea. I am always puzzled by the critics who rave about movies that don't appeal to me. I have simple requirements, it has to entertain me and hold my attention beginning to end. If a critic has to explain why we are supposed to like it or what it means, it isn't for me.

  18. Dear DJan, I'm so glad you can hear. I'm totally deaf in my left ear because of Menier's Disease and so I truly appreciate what not hearing out of one ear means.

I'm not sure if I've recommended the following book to you, but in my mind it should wine every writing award for a 2012-published book. It's a literary mystery by the Canadian writer Louise Penny. It's the latest in her series on Inspector Gamache of Quebec. The title of this truly astounding novel is "The Beautiful Mystery." If you read novels, I so encourage you to get this one and read it. For me it captures much of what happens to me when I have a PTSD episode. Peace.
