That was some March we had

From NOAA's State of the Climate
I know that most of my blogging friends live in states that show up as red in this graph of last month's temperatures, and there's one state that was actually below normal. Guess where I live? Up there in the only blue-temperature state on the map! Not only that, but the entire West Coast had above-normal precipitation amounts during March; many of the soggiest places were on the West Coast, too.
Before we moved to Washington state, I lived for more than three decades in the ONLY red square on the precipitation map. I'm trying not to take it all personally. But I take heart in the fact that Texas has been in a severe drought, and now it seems like maybe it's easing up a bit. I know from a couple of my blogging friends that things are greening up quite nicely down there. Kind of shows why... and the Texas bluebonnets are everywhere in profusion.
We have just finished having a beautiful weekend with sunny skies, and on Easter Sunday Seattle reached 70 degrees F for the first time this year. Last year, we didn't hit 70 degrees until May 20! So, this Pacific Northwest springtime has suddenly turned incredibly lovely, with all the birds singing and flowers blooming everywhere. I took the picture of the blossoms on my way to the bus yesterday morning. And what is raising my spirits to no end is that for the first time since last fall, I'm seeing THIS as our predicted weather for the next period:
From Climate Prediction Center
Zippity-doo-da, Zippety-YAY! My oh my what a wonderful day... plenty of sunshine comin' my way, beautiful feelin', beautiful day. Hope it's gonna be nice in your part of the world, too. We are so ready for this.
:-)

  1. No doubt Washington's winter was more harsh than Oregon's. I'm delighted your endurance is being rewarded with some nice weather.

  3. The west coast can certainly be wet and cool. surprising that in Arizona many so called "snow birds " are from Washington Oregon because of the rain.

  4. I wish you nothing but the sweetest of days, DJan. We've cooled down considerably after our incredibly warm period in March. I don't mind sharing.. you're due. :)

  5. I do wish you could shift some of that rain our way; we need it (South Georgia.)
I love the fact that springtime has reached you, and that you are happily looking forward to the remainder of April and May as spring continues to show its beauty. Wonderful days for you, my friend!

  7. As much as I'd like to move to Washington, I don't because of the weather. Same with Oregon. They are probably the best states in the country but the weather... well, as you've said.

So, I am so happy you are finally having nice days, and the best of both worlds.

  8. Yes, oh yes! We worked out in the yard again today. It was quite warm, and DRY, fragrant with flower perfume and birds singing.
Tonight on the news I heard and saw the wild fires that are now a big problem in the EAST coast.

  11. It's goofy here again...back to regular April temps and lots of rain supposedly on its way...like 6 days worth.

Never got above 58 today, and freeze warnings for tonight.
    sigh.....

  12. Here in Hawaii, it's been raining off and on over the past few days. Easter was very wet, but Saturday was dry enough for Maria to host an Easter egg hunt.

  13. Gee, DJan great post and if you had just moved that map a wee bit East, you would have included out Hot Spot there as well.
After the snow, we are again on the way to high temps. I took PJ for early morning walk and watched the fog roll in across the St. Croix River and right over my head - it was super thick and dry. Now, approx 1 1/2 hr later the sun is peeking out and drying up the fog - when we get this fog early morning, usually leads up to hot, hot day - my tulips are peeking at me :)
p.s. Love your landing - do you mind if I copy that photo and share it with my neice?

  14. All I can say is I just hope some of your rain and cooler weather will reach us real soon...I'm tired of going out to water stuff. LOLOLOL

It's greening up nicely in South Texas, but we haven't had any significant rainfall for over a week now...and HOT temps. Just hope it's not another year like last year.

I'd settle for your 'below normal temps' about right now.

  15. March was a weird month for us with all the wind and rain with a day or two of warm. April has been even stranger here on this side with 73 degrees one day and snow the next morning. Some sunshine would be really nice.
    Have a great day DJan!

  17. The two-day streak of sun allowed me to dash out and mow the lawn quickly before the monsoon set back in.

I didn't appreciate how perfect the weather was where I grew up in the San Francisco area. I couldn't afford to live there now, though.

  18. Very interesting D-Jan. I know it's been hotter than usual in Tennessee and so it was here in my part of London for a couple of weeks, but now we're back to cold mornings and nights and sun and showers all day - typical weather for April. Who knows what sort of summer we'll have!!
