Thanksgiving 2010

Thanksgiving Day 2008
Today is our third Thanksgiving here in the Pacific Northwest. I had not started my blog when we had our first one, and our dinner this year will not look much different than the above picture. I have a few crab cakes to add, some lovely steamed broccoli and brussels sprouts, and Great Harvest Bread Company organic spelt rolls. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same, with salmon courtesy of my fisherman friend Gene. He also gave us salmon last year and this year. I guess you could say it's becoming a tradition.

I went for a wintry walk, since we woke up here in Bellingham to more snow. Although rain is falling farther south, the cold air that came down the Fraser Valley last week is still in place in our part of the state, causing our precipitation to fall in the form of snow. Sometime this evening it should change to rain, with the temperatures rising above freezing sometime tomorrow. It has been a really cold week. Although it is nice to have a warm and cozy place to live, I have to admit I am bundled up while inside, since getting the temperature in here up to 63 degrees (Fahrenheit, 17 C) is a challenge. At noon it was 27 degrees outside with 90% humidity, which I find to be on the chilly side.

But I'm still grateful for not having lost electricity during the wind storm, since everything in the apartment is electric, including the heat. I've wondered what we would do if we lost power, since we couldn't stay here very long. A fireplace is nice for many reasons, not the least of which is having an independent heat source.

My complaints are few and far between. My gratitude is boundless. I'd like to give thanks for my health, my life partner, family members scattered far and wide, having abundance enough to feed the birds and pay for a gym membership, and for you, my blogging friends. My life has been enriched beyond all expectations by visiting your blogs, as well as cherishing the insightful comments many of you leave for me. Thanksgiving 2010 is all right!
:-)

  1. Beautiful! I, too, am incredibly blessed. I am grateful for so much in my life. I'd have to say my family tops the list, but there are so many others in my life that make it so worth it. Even all those moments in which I think they're going to drive me crazy, there's still a part of me that's aware of how perfect my life is.

I have too many blessings to count. Today is a great reminder to not take them for granted. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you, DJan!

  3. HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you too DJan!

If your meal turns out as scrumptious as the one above, your stomach and tastebuds will also have something to be thankful for! ;o) Looks a lot better than my improvised shindig this evening!

This is the one day a year the gringa in me really comes to the surface... I always feel bad if I can't celebrate it with my family, and I've had to make do in various ways for the past 10 years. But I've always found something to be grateful for, and after family I think friends are the best thing there is! Where next to us, in the next city or country, or in cyberspace! ;o)

    HUGS!!!

    and bon apétit!!!

  5. You holiday menu sounds delicious. You got up to 27 over your way? Could you please push some of the warmth over here? We did manage to get out of the single digits and all the way up to 18F today but it's starting to drop again.

I too am blessed with a wonderful life and great blogging friends, it doesn't get much better.

    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Judy

  8. Sounds like you have your priorities in order for the things you're thankful for. I do believe you are at peace with yourself, something many people desire but never find.

  10. Happy Thanksgiving! The salmon looks great..we eat our fair share of it..but I bet yours tastes better than frozen! 63 degrees indoors is what I would call really chilly..we heat with wood so we can be 74 degrees all the time or warmer!! I sometimes ask for a blanket at the neighbors..they are 60 something degree people too:(

  12. You have much for which to be thankful and your post is truly lovely. Considering your weather, you are indeed fortunate to not have lost electricity. At least we have 3 heating options: electric central heating, a propane cook stove -- burners can be turned on to help heat the living area -- and a fire place.

Dinner sounds elegantly non-traditional, yet unique and fabulous.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  13. I love salmon and I'm sure yours was delicious yesterday! Now today, the day after, the contentment sets in, doesn't it. So much to be thankful for in our lives and so many reminders of others less fortunate than we are, to remind us. We have very cold weather in the U.K. too today and the snow is coming.
    Keep warm and smiling.
    Blessings, Star

  14. I hope your holiday was wonderful even with interesting weather. Our Thanksgiving celebrations always seem marked with rain, gray days and sleet yesterday. Even so, family and traditions keep it wonderful. Relatives in Florida sent pictures of their day on the beach. Nice contrast. Variety in weather is fun.

  18. Thanks for the message on my blog - I love your blog. It is so visually beautiful. We had about the same dinner for Thanksgiving with our son and daughter in law in Birch Bay. Salmon, asparagus, mussels, fruits, pie..mmmm,mmmmm

  19. I love crab cakes, especially ones with lump crab!

It gets down to the low 60s in January at night here in Honolulu -- sometimes down to the mid-50s. We have no indoor heating, so we close all of our windows and wear a flannel robe until the day warms up to the 70s.

Lots to be grateful for, especially for friends like you, Jan!

  20. And you couldn't get the heat above 63 degrees, why?
