City of subdued excitement

For some unknown reason (at least I haven't been able to find out why), Bellingham, Washington is known as the "city of subdued excitement." And now, there's a viral video on YouTube that is all about my new home town:

I listened to it a couple of times, the beat is rather catchy, and I've been to all the places shown in the video. The phrase about "Subdued Excitement" adorns several walls around the city. Maybe now that this video has gone viral, somebody will be able to tell me the answer to that mystery.

My favorite weatherman, Cliff Mass, just put up an interesting post on his blog about all the rainy weather we've been having. Apparently, this is just not normal weather around here. Not having many fall periods to compare this to, I wondered how it stacks up to previous years, and Cliff gives an interesting statistic on that post:
For the calendar day yesterday Seattle set a new daily [rainfall] record (.78 inches) ...old record .57 inches in 1983. Want even more? So far this month (ending midnight) SeaTac has received 3.74 inches, which IS THE WETTEST 18 days on record for September at that location.
Okay. I guess I can look forward to more of the same. It's raining hard right now. Whatever happens this fall and winter, I'm pretty happy with the place where I've decided to spend my golden years. And speaking of golden, the colors in the foliage around here are beginning their annual display! Wow, that was fast: last time I looked I was taking pictures of the spring flowers, and now we are preparing for short days and long nights.
:-)

  1. Hubby and I watched the video and enjoyed it. He moved to Bellingham from Arizona where he had spent most of his life, but he was only in Bellingham about a year and then he went to San Diego to meet me but he didn't know that yet. Nice post, DJan. And about the weather, with the ice melting around the world we are having extremes in weather more and more. Hope you had a wonderful weekend. Thanks for sharing the video of where you live.

  2. It is kind of an interesting description (motto) for a city. :D Our gym was located in the zipcode 78704. After a few years and certainly not referring to the gym, bumper stickers started appears with "78704 is a lifestyle." lol

  8. I am listening to the music while writing this comment and tapping my injured foot and nodding my head. How time flies, it's September once more, we have longer nights now, but it's supposed to be the wet season, why am I sweating too much due to intense heat? That' a quick tour to Bellingham, thanks! Coffee looks so good!

  9. Cool song. If you learn the story behind the phrase you'll have to fill us in.

Having lived in the Portland/Vancouver area I thought all it ever did over there was rain. I have flown in and out of SeaTac dozens of times and maybe twice it wasn't raining. Could the reason be El Nino?

  11. Out son went to Western Washington University in B-ham for four years, so we made quite s few trips up I-5. We did enjoy shopping at Hagans (is that right?) and strolling the Fairhaven district. Jake chose it for it's proximity to the mountains and the sea. It is a beautiful place with a small town feel.

  14. I enjoyed that video and it showed quite a bit of your home town. About 3.20 through it, I saw a large pink building on the video. Is that the hospital?

  16. ooh! the foliage here in Belgium has also just begun switching colours right before my eyes this past week! I need to hurry up and take some photos of the parks while they're still green so I can contrast them with the rainbow-colours later on my travel blog! the season is coming in too quickly for me to keep up, lol! :p
